Edmonton International Airport Information

Edmonton International Airport is a big one, serving the city of Edmonton, Alberta and the surrounding region. It serves over 6 million passengers a year and is located in Leduc County, 26 kilometres south of downtown Edmonton.   The airport first opened in 1960 and the first passenger terminal was built in 1963. Passenger numbers took off in the 1970s, and in 1998 it underwent a huge upgrade to increase passenger capacity to 5.5 million with the construction of several new buildings. The airport has since undergone further expansion to handle increased volume of passengers to the area.   WestJet considers Edmonton as one of its largest focus cities, and offers 27 destinations from Edmonton International Airport. The airport is also an important hub for Air Canada, and is a connecting airport for several lines which fly between the United States and Canada.   The airport offers a total of 59 destinations on over 15 airlines. Many of these are domestic, but the airport also offers a good number of flights to the United States and even further afield to Europe and the Caribbean. Customs   International passengers arriving at Edmonton International Airport will have to pass Canadian customs checks before being permitted to enter the country. Travellers must declare any plant, animal or food-related items as there are restrictions on some of these, and some require documentation. There are slightly different restrictions for those coming from the United States. Find out more at   Prohibited from being brought in on your commercial flight include a list of the usual suspects- counterfeit currency, firearms and weapons, and illegal drugs. Check the rules before travelling. Some out-of-the-ordinary prohibited items include Yoyos, re-light candles, lawn darts with elongated tips and infant self-feeding devices.   Security   The security process for travellers leaving Edmonton International Airport is intended to ensure the safety of all passengers. To make it go smoothly, please disclose to a security officer any special requirements you may have due to a medical condition, disability or religious or cultural consideration which will prevent you from participating fully in the security process. They can work around these whilst still fulfilling security requirements.   Take out any electronic devices out whilst in line for the metal detectors, ready to place into a plastic bin. All carry-on items including coats, jackets, purses and bags should go into another bin. Only passengers travelling to the U.S. will be required to remove their shoes. Your carry-on items will be scanned as you pass through a metal detector when signalled to do so. Some passengers are selected for random physical searches. You may request a private area for this. Don’t forget to reclaim all belongings after passing through security!   As with any airport terminal, security is tight and the behaviour of terminal users is likely to be monitored. Any comments about explosives or terrorism, be they serious or in jest, may result in questioning. Never leave luggage unattended as it will be taken as a bomb threat.
